The technological principle of INTERRURAL is to provide rural areas with Internet connection by means of terrestrial advanced wireless networks that access the Internet backbone via a satellite link. Different wireless technologies (such as WiMAX, WiFi or PLC) are analyzed with the aim of obtaining trade-offs in terms of system performance vs. deployment cost requirements.
The official live demonstration of INTERRURAL took place at the Bellaterra campus of UAB on 28th March 2008. It consisted of a series of realistic experiments with the WiMAX and WiFi experimental networks deployed at the UAB campus. Both interactive and non-real-time high-speed communication services were demonstrated in scenarios adapted to rural area characteristics. <demo brochure> <presentation>
The INTERRURAL Project has been funded by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce under the PROFIT call with reference FIT-330210-2007-57.
