Bio

Miquel Garcia-Fernandez is a Lecturer and researcher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), as part of the Signal Processing for Communications and Navigation (SPCOMNAV) group. He is a GNSS Research Engineer with more than 25 years of experience in satellite navigation, positioning and GNSS data processing. He received his BSc in Telecommunication Engineering in 1999 and his PhD in Aerospace Science and Technology in 2004, both from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), with doctoral research focused on GNSS data processing for ionospheric monitoring. His professional career spans academia, research and industry, including positions at the Research Center for Sustainable Humanosphere (RISH), Kyoto University, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Starlab Barcelona, and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL/NASA), where he worked on GNSS data processing for navigation, geodesy and orbit determination and on physical models for the next-generation GPS control segment. From 2015 to 2024, he was co-founder and CTO of Rokubun, where he led the development of GNSS positioning and data-processing technologies and coordinated research and innovation projects. He has extensive experience in software development, project management and the preparation and coordination of European research and innovation proposals involving organisations such as ESA, EUSPA and the European Commission.

Research interests

His research focuses on GNSS positioning, navigation and data processing, including precise positioning, error modelling and GNSS-based geodesy and orbit determination.
He is particularly interested in ionospheric modelling and monitoring, including GNSS-based ionospheric sensing, tomography and the study of ionospheric effects on positioning and navigation.
His work also explores alternative and complementary PNT technologies, including wireless positioning, TDoA systems, GNSS/IMU integration and positioning using terrestrial and non-terrestrial signals.
